Despite constant surveillance of his every move by the FBI, I.F. Stone, a college drop-out who started as an unknown, scrappy New York street reporter became America’s most influential radical journalist, even challenging the mighty Senator Joseph McCarthy himself. Given the rejection of his most radical stories by the liberal journals of his day, how did Stone establish a business model that allowed him to survive financially and still publish un-censored stories? And, with the total military secrecy established by the Johnson administration, how did he find inside information and write accurate stories in the I.F. Stone’s Weekly about the war in Vietnam that inspired an entire generation of activists who eagerly awaited the arrival of every issue? Could Stone’s career serve as a model for journalists today, as the business of news gathering and publishing undergoes seismic changes?

D.D. Guttenplan is the author of The Holocaust on Trial: History, Justice and the David Irving Libel Case, and is an award-winning former writer for Newsday. Born in Virginia, he currently serves as the London correspondent for The Nation.
