MOHAMMED OMER was born and raised in the Rafah refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. A journalist for the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, he has had articles and photographs featured in publications around the world. In 2008, he became the youngest journalist ever to be awarded the Martha Gelhorn Prize for Journalism. He was honored as “the voice of the voiceless” whose reporting constituted a “humane record of the injustice imposed on a community forgotten by much of the world.” As he was traveling back to the Gaza Strip from the award ceremony in London, he was beaten and humiliated by Israeli soldiers at the Allenby Bridge border crossing. His treatment precipitated an international outcry.
