<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style=""> </span>In recent weeks in March there was the 50th anniversary of the Sharpeville massacre in S. Africa, and the anniversary also in March of the defeat over 20 years ago of the apartheid army in its invasion of Angola. <br></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;"> In March 1988 the combined forces of Cuban volunteers, the
Angolan army and fighters from the South West Africa People’s Organization
(SWAPO) of Namibia, dealt a decisive military defeat to South Africa’s invading
troops at the battle of Cuito Cuanavale.</span></p>
<p class="DefaultText"><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style=""> </span>That victory led to the independence of
Namibia, and in the following years the unbanning of the African National
Congress and the freeing of Nelson Mandela from prison. But this history and
the key role played by Cuba is not well known.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
