Calling for abolition of nuclear weapons, peace, and justice, 10,000 marchers from around the world demonstrated in New York May 2. The rally was led by Japanese survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki A-bombs, the Mayors for Peace, and four groups of peace walkers who had marched hundreds of miles to reach New York. Thousands attended from Japan, France, Britain, Germany, the U.S., and elsewhere. The rally was organized by United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ) and a coalition of 300 international groups, including a busload of UJP'ers.

Rallying in Times Square to hear speakers and musicians, the protesters marched across midtown Manhattan to Dag Hammarskjold Plaza near the United Nations. Many are staying to attend the UN's month-long Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPR) Review Conference, which convenes today, to press their demand for abolition of nuclear weapons by the year 2020.

Hear Japanese Delegates and A-Bomb Survivors in Ipswich Tonight...

Tonight, the House of Peace and the North Shore Coalition for Peace and Justice will present a delegation of 70 leading Japanese peace activists, including three A-bomb survivors (Hibakusha). Take advantage of this historic and rare opportunity to meet with and listen to a major delegation sent to the UN in a time of world nuclear peril from the only country, as yet, to suffer nuclear holocaust. To hear the Hibakusha speak is a profoundly moving experience.

The activists are members of a 2,000 strong delegation from Japan who journeyed to the US for the NPT conference. They are urgently appealing to the UN to make an unequivocal commitment to the abolition of all nuclear weapons. This evening's program at First Church, Ipswich includes talks given by Hibakusha and Japanese delegates, Japanese and American musicians, and artwork by survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
