After a potentially demoralizing 2008 Republican defeat, the emergence of the Tea Party provided conservative activists with a new identity.<br><br>What are the sources of the group’s influence? How it is like other recent attempts to create a third party in our de facto bipartisan system? How is it different? What impact has it had on current policy debates? On the 2012 election cycle?<br><br>Theda Skocpol is the Victor S. Thomas Professor of Government and Sociology at Harvard University. Her research focuses on U.S. social policy and civic engagement in American democracy, including changes since the 1960's. She has recently launched new projects on the development of U.S. higher education and on the transformations of U.S. federal policy in the Obama era. Among her many academic honors, in 2007, she was awarded the Johan Skytte Prize in political science, the largest and most prestigious in field. Her many books and articles have been widely cited in political science literature. She has published a dozen books.
