HOME, Inc., MIT, and the Barr Foundation, present a one-day conference on
Media Literacy. The event is scheduled for October 22nd and will take place
at the MIT Campus: Building E51 (Tang Center), from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This
year¹s conference theme is ³Media Literacy, a Focus on Youth: Learning,
Collaborating, and Creating the Future of Education² Here is the link for on
line registration: http://www.mlc2011.ezregister.com
Some of the feature presentations include: 1) A robust student maintained
web based portfolio that manages projects and lets teachers act as guides.
You will be able to see this in action as the nationally cable cast TeenTV
shows are looked at in various stages of development and students explain
how they developed their projects on line. 2) A look at 21st Century skills,
what they are and how they can be used as self assessment tools that
motivate students to achieve at higher levels. You will have a chance to
meet Dr. Arnold Packer, the Undersecretary of Labor in the Carter
Administration who championed 21st Century Skills and who¹s work is
underlying the Mass Work Based Learning Plan that is the gold standard for
assessing after school and out of school time programs. 3) A practical
look at the cost savings of new technologies and how that is affecting the
kinds of employment opportunities that your students will be facing,
particularly in media and journalism... The most practical example is
Backpack Journalism which will be discussed in detail by education and
media innovator, Adam Weiss.
