<div><br></div><div>On Sunday, December 11, fifth grade students from the Workmen’s Circle's Jewish Sunday School will lead their parents and peers to the Trader Joe’s at 734 Memorial Drive in Cambridge to protest the store’s refusal to work with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), an internationally recognized farmworker organization, to address the sub-poverty wages and abuses faced by the farmworkers who pick the tomatoes sold at the store. The students will deliver a letter demanding that Trader Joe’s support the CIW by signing onto their “Fair Food Agreement” which guarantees the workers a pay raise and a participatory health and safety program, among other things.</div>
<div><br></div><div>The students have been learning about the sweatshops their Jewish ancestors toiled in when they first arrived in the US and are outraged that such injustice still exists today. The students will open with a speech at the Morse Elementary School Playground and will then march to Trader Joe’s where they will deliver a letter to management asking the chain to support the rights of the Immokalee workers. </div>
<div><br></div><div>This action is part of the CIW’s “Campaign for Fair Food”, begun over 10 years ago. Several retail companies including McDonald’s, Burger King, Subway, and Whole Foods, are all already working with the CIW. </div>
<div><br></div><div>“One more penny per pound!” is the rallying cry. Join the students and chant this message together! </div><div><br></div><div>Questions? Contact Leah Madsen at <a href="mailto:leah@circleboston.org">leah@circleboston.org</a> or 617-566-6281</div>
