Johnson declared a “War on Poverty”. Thirty two years later, President
Clinton claimed to end “welfare as we know it,” overseeing a major overhaul of
programs serving mostly poor single mothers. The “Washington Consensus”
holds that promoting employment is the ticket out of poverty, and that
1990s-style welfare reform has been a success. But with the number
of people in poverty at historic highs, how successful has this strategy really
been?</FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 12pt"><o:p><FONT
size=4> </FONT></o:p></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 12pt"><FONT size=4>Why is poverty so
persistent in the <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">U.S.</st1:place></st1:country-region>? Why does poverty fall so
especially heavily on women, especially single mothers? Why don’t our
“anti-poverty” programs seem to help? Most importantly, how can we do
better?</FONT></SPAN></P>

form an autonomous zone and share skills needed to maintain that, to entertain
educate and enliven Occupiers and the general public. Our purpose is to provide
support and space for skill sharing and sharing basic info regarding Occupy
Boston and to encourage self-organization, teaching, and learning
