Vogel, Harvard University China expert, discussing his new book Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China. This masterful and comprehensive study chronicles Deng’s rich and intricate career from his birth in 1904 at the end of the Qing Dynasty to his death in 1997 a few months before the return of Hong Kong to the mainland. Deng’s life spanned almost a century of dramatic changes in China as it experienced war, the Communist Revolution, decades of Mao’s rule, and finally, economic boom, and Deng played a major in his nation’s development over that period. How did Deng succeed in finding a path to make China a wealthy and powerful member of the international community? What personal and cultural factors contributed to his success? What obstacles did he face? Since Deng himself was extremely reticent, how did Vogel go about researching and writing this masterful study of Deng's life and legacy?<br><br>Ezra F. Vogel is the Henry Ford II Professor of the Social Sciences Emeritus at Harvard. An expert on both Japan and China, he has visited Asia every summer since 1958. Over his career, Vogel has authored or co-authored 15 books and numerous articles for both academic and popular journals. The Japanese edition of his 1979 book Japan as Number One: Lessons for America is still the all-time best-seller in Japan of non-fiction by a Western author. In 1987 he began studying the transformation of China, spending eight months at the invitation of the Guangdong Provincial Government, studying the economic and social progress of the province since it took the lead in pioneering economic reform in 1978. The results are reported in One Step Ahead in China: Guangdong Under Reform (1989). Vogel retired from teaching in 2000.
