Sandy which hit the Caribbean and eastern seaboard of the US on October 29 was
massive; over 100 people dead in the US and 69 in the Caribbean; 8 million
people lost power across the eastern US; billions in damages; rail and
transport were shut down across the region, and subways and tunnels were
flooded in Manhattan.</div>
<div class="yiv725265531MsoHeading7" style="margin-bottom:6.0pt;">The response by the government
at all levels—city, state and federal—to the consequences of Hurricane Sandy
shows the callousness of the capitalist rulers. Workers were told to evacuate
and they were on their own, with no transportation provided and with little put
in place to provide shelter or other necessities for the millions affected. The
lack of adequate shelter is now becoming a larger disaster. </div>
<div style="margin-top:0in;margin-right:0in;margin-bottom:6.0pt;margin-left:0in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; ">Together with the high unemployment workers face the
disaster underscores the need to fight for a government-funded jobs program—to
put those who are jobless to work providing immediate relief to those
devastated by the effects of years of capitalist neglect to public transit,
housing, the electric grid in workers’ neighborhoods and other infrastructure. </span></div>
<div style="margin-top:0in;margin-right:0in;margin-bottom:6.0pt;margin-left:0in;"><span style="font-family: Arial; ">The actions of the U.S. government were the opposite
of that of revolutionary Cuba where help to evacuate millions, along with their
property and pets, is organized on a massive scale—where all are provided with
food, medical care and all other necessities. </span></div>
