Cambridge Forum hosts award-winning film-maker Will Tiao. Tiao, who is in town discussing his film Formosa Betrayed,
will talk about the role of Taiwan in U.S. relations with China. The
United States does not recognize Taiwan as a sovereign nation, and
maintains a "One-China" policy. But the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979,
passed after the U.S. established diplomatic relations with Beijing,
pledges to help defend the island if it is attacked by China. Tiao
discusses the history behind these relations, examines Taiwan’s
importance to global politics, and explores how the people of Taiwan
negotiate this complex web of history, language, and politics on a daily
basis. Denis Wu of Boston University serves as moderator for the
public discussion.

Will Tiao is the writer, producer, and
lead actor of the award-winning political thriller Formosa Betrayed.
Inspired by actual events, the film is the story of the FBI
investigation of the brutal murder of a Taiwanese-American professor on
U.S. soil. Prior to taking up a career in entertainment, Tiao spent a
decade working in international politics. He served on Senator Nancy
Kassebaum’s staff at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and worked
for both the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations on issues of
international trade and economics, including as a negotiator on
international trade agreements in the U.S. Trade Representative’s
Office. Since 2002, he has performed in a variety of roles on the stage
in Los Angeles, New York, and Washington DC and on television for Fox
and Comedy Central, as well as CBS and NBC. In addition to Formosa
Betrayed, he has written, produced and starred in the award-winning
short film A Starbucks Story and produced the 2010 independent film Stan. He is founder and president of Formosa Films LLC, a film development and production company.

Denis Wu
