<html><head></head><body><div class="yahoo-style-wrap" style="font-family:times new roman, new york, times, serif;font-size:16px;"><div style="font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size:13px;color:#26282a;">I was there when it started..John Anderson of Arlington was major driver..and we sat up cages on the lawn at Copley and wore orange jump suits to protest Guantanamo..and we had weekly meetings in Arlington, and that was long ago...things have changed. <br clear="none"><div><div id="ydp506935c9yiv0475259163"><div><div class="ydp506935c9yiv0475259163ydp521bee90yahoo-style-wrap" style="font-family:times new roman, new york, times, serif;font-size:16px;"><div dir="ltr"><div dir="ltr"><br clear="none"><div dir="ltr"><div dir="ltr">Before UJP, back in the 60's it seemed that besides being activists, people read political, economic history and theory, and had a systemic analysis within which their activism made sense....The Black Panthers in particular were serious theoreticians and students of history as well as activists---their public school breakfast programs that are institutionalized today were revolutionary back then...and grassroots/community based activities fit in with their critique of capitalist exploitation and socialistic goals. Same with the Brown Berets, Woman's Liberation Movement, and Chicano Movement, United Farm Workers...those that I was involved with. Then came the "me first" days of the 70's, and growing reactionary liberal activities with no systemic analysis guiding increasingly splintered groups and no sense of how to organize popular, community-based grassroots movements, no connection with the community and working people, and total loss of any understanding of class analysis....that elitist exceptionalism, affluent closed-mindedness continues today. </div>RIP UJP! <h2>United for Justice with Peace Shutting Down</h2>

Ave. has been sold and UJP needs to move out this Spring. The website contract also runs out on April 19 and we will take down the website as well. UJP can no longer maintain UJP Discuss and the listserve will be terminated. UJP is shutting down.</p>
<p>United for Justice with Peace was formed immediately after 9/11 in 2001 primarily to oppose the US-launched war on terror, and wars and occupations in Afghanistan and Iraq. A large coalition was formed both locally and nationally. Much was accomplished, including the organizing of 50,000 people on Boston Common protesting the Iraq War in March 2003. Dozens of community groups and peace and justice groups joined the coalition. But times have changed and a new generation of activists has emerged. The urgency of opposing war remains, especially the targeting of China and Russia and the threat of nuclear war. Working for justice and a sustainable environment remain urgent priorities.</p>
<p>We want to thank all the organizations and people who worked hard and contributed so much! Stay well and safe, and work for peace and justice!</p>
