======== INVITATION TO JOIN NEW UJP WORKING GROUP: ASIA/PACIFIC ISSUES =======
Activists are invited to join a new UJP working group or committee devoted to
Asia/ Pacific issues, which are becoming more and more important in the
peace/antiwar movement. Contact Duncan McFarland, coordinator, at
mcfarland13 at gmail.com
or 617-650-2045 if you are interested in joining or more information.
UJP is currently working on two projects which people may volunteer for::
a) Feb. 23 forum on the Trans Pacific Partnership sponsored by MoveOn.
The TPP is a NAFTA-like trade deal being pushed by the US with broad
implications.
b) April 19 conference on Asia/Pacific issues sponsored by AFSC. This
will have both educational and activist components.
The US drawdown of military forces from Iraq and Afghanistan is being
followed by a "rebalancing" or buildup in the Asia/Pacific region. This is
a long term US strategy as Asia/Pacific is becoming the engine of global
economic growth. 2013 has seen serious tensions in the Korean peninsula and
over the islands in the East China sea, as well as disputes in the South
China sea. Rising China is perceived as a major challenge to US dominance
and re-emerging Japanese militarism is a threat to peace in the region.
Your thoughts and ideas are welcome!
United for Justice with Peace [1] is a coalition of peace and justice
organizations and community peace groups in the Greater Boston region. The
UJP Coalition, formed after September 11th, seeks global peace through social
and economic justice.
