Framing Military Occupation:  Close-ups of Daily Life in the Occupied Palestinian
Territories
March 5 @ 7pm
The media give us views of Israel/Palestine influenced by politics,  international
law, and distance. But what does life in the Occupied Palestinian Territories  feel
like on the ground? Physician Alice Rothchild of  American Jews for a Just Peace
 -- Boston (AJJP) leads a panel discussion  on living under military occupation 
in the Occupied Palestinian  Territories.  Panelists Laila Bernstein, Tali Ruskin,
and Dr. Alan Meyers from the AJJP Health and Human Rights Project  present their
 observations of daily life in the West Bank and East  Jerusalem.
Made  during their visits as part of human rights delegations over the past  decade,
these close-ups provide a very different view of the impacts of  the Israeli occupation
on the local Palestinian population and raise  serious questions about the effects
on education, health care, legal  rights, mobility, family life, and future political
solutions.

Why Doctors Write
March 26 @7pm

Beacon Press editor Helene Atwan explores the relationship between editor and author
with Danielle Ofri, a practicing physician, author, and the editor of the Bellevue
Literary Review, the  premier literary journal focused on illness, health, and healing.
 How  does writing change Ofri's practice of medicine?   How does editing the  journal
inform her view of her hospital and her patients?  How is Helene  Atwan's sense 
of the power of writing changed through her work with  this "doctor who writes"?

This  program is part of the series My Life Touched by Art, supported by a  grant
from the Cambridge Arts Council and the Massachusetts Cultural  Council, a public
agency.
