FILM :THE GHOSTS OF JEJU
THURSDAY APRIL 3, 6:45-9
Award wining documentary by RegisTremblay about the struggle of the people of Jeju Island, South Korea set in the context of the American presence in Korea after World War II. " Jeju Island is a tiny Korean 'crown jewel.''Gangjeong Village on Jeju has been populated for 500 years by indigenous farmers, fishermen and their families. ....Against the villagers will all the biggest problematic planetary issues have converged upon this tiny , historically peaceful island , making it a symbol reflecting ...everything the world's peace movement is challenging: violation of human rights, ecological
devastation, forceful domination--including forced relocation of indigenous people. The plan is to relocate the villagers and replace them with housing for 8000 military personnel. There has been constant prolonged protest for the last six years." ( from Op Ed by Judith Hicks)
Joseph Gerson of the AFSC will be joining for the discussion after the film
The Jeju naval base is just one of many new bases and military
initiatives essential to the Obama Administration's "Pivot" from Iraq and
Afghanistan to Asia and the Pacific to "manage China's rise."
