With less than twenty days to go before the November statewide
elections, the Yes for Question 3 and some supporters of Yes for
Question 4 campaigns are doing joint efforts and have streamlined
their message: voting “Yes” for both ballot measures is a vote for
social justice.
The “Yes for Justice” campaign, which is a collaboration between
Stand For Democracy (www.standfordemocracy.com
<http://www.standfordemocracy.com/>) and some clergy from
Massachusetts Communities Action Network, and they will kick off at
Harvard University on October 22^nd at 6:30 PM with an interfaith
prayer service entitled “Towards a New Dawn”. The service is
expected to attract over 1,000 religious leaders from around
Massachusetts.
“This is the largest interfaith gathering in the great history of
Harvard”, said Professor Harvey Cox of Harvard Divinity School. Cox
holds the Hollis Chair of Divinity which dates back to 1721 and is
the oldest endowed chair at Harvard University. He is generally
regarded as one of the most important theologians in the 20th and
21st Century after his 1965 book /The Secular City/ sold over one
million copies.
The service will be opened by Imam Sherif Shabaka who is traveling
from Durham, North Carolina for the service and will be performing
an “Adhan” or a call a prayer. It will be closed by Rabbi Moshe
Waldoks of Temple Beth Zion in Brookline. In between the imam and
rabbi, several speakers, including religious, intellectual and
community leaders from across the United States will join thousands
of supporters to urge voters from all walks of life to vote “Yes for
Justice” on Questions 3 and 4. Speakers will also lay out the moral,
economic, and intellectual foundation for this new campaign.
Along with Harvey Cox, the keynote speaker will be the Revered
Doctor Virgil Wood who is traveling from Houston, Texas for this
service. Rev. Dr. Wood was a close associate of Martin Luther King,
Jr in the last years of King's life. Wood also sat on the original
executive board of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference when
Dr. King founded the organization in 1957.
“The statements made at this service by these leading thinkers and
activists of religion and society from both Harvard University and
the rest of the world world will be studied for generations to come
by intellectuals and theologians. Never since perhaps Ralph Waldo
Emerson's 'Divinity School Address' has more important theological
statements been made at Harvard”, said Pedro Morales of Stand For
Democracy.

as justice issues by significant clergy leaders in our organization.
So we have worked hard to find ways that clergy and congregations that
believe that can act on both issues", said Lew Finfer from
Massachusetts Community Action Network.

witnessing a manifestation of this great American tradition of faith
