*Mission Hill and the Miracle of Boston*, Richard Broadman, b&w, 66 min,
1978
Presented by Dylan Palmer of the Boston May Day Coalition
Mission Hill and the Miracle of Boston is a revealing and historically
informative documentary by the local documentarian and independent
filmmaker Richard Broadman. Through interviews and invaluable footage of
Mission Hill, Broadman captures the social conflicts and divisions that
characterized 1970's Boston and America under "urban renewal". Mission Hill
shows the dark underbelly of Boston's urban renaissance as Mission Hill's
working class residents deal with displacement, decay, and land speculation
as nearby hospitals and universities expanded, housing projects were built,
and an affluent population began to move in. The film also touches on the
character of the racial conflict and oppression that plagued Boston in the
1970’s. Mission Hill is a story of social conflict, urban renewal, and
displacement which sheds light on the urban politics of Boston today.
There will be a discussion following the film.
