As we mark the anniversaries of Hurricane María and the Grito de Lares, join the Boston branch of FIRE for a discussion on the history of Puerto Rico and its continued status as a US colony.

Colonial policies like the Jones Act and the inability of the Puerto Rican people to control their own policy at the highest levels were decisive factors in the debt crisis that led to the PROMESA Act. This criminal law handed control of the island to an unelected fiscal junta which has destroyed education, healthcare, and basic infrastructure on the island in service of Wall Street vultures who have placed the profit they can make off of holding Puerto Rican debt over the lives of the Puerto Rican people.

The destruction of the island was brought to a new level last year when Hurricane María made landfall on the island. While the US government blocked material aid from countries like Cuba, Venezuela, and Mexico, lucrative reconstruction contracts were handed out to US companies. Now, the fiscal junta is looking to sell off the island piece by piece to business interests as more school close and much of the island remains without power.

Organizers on the island and across the United States are holding the Puerto Rico Tribunal <https://www.facebook.com/events/222592841680891/> in New York City next month (Oct 27), to expose US colonial crimes on the island. https://www.facebook.com/events/222592841680891/

After the talks, we'll discuss the tribunal and how you can help support.
