> Hello SftP Boston,
>
> I live in Worcester and I have yet to meet most of you but I want everyone to be aware of an effort led by the Western MA chapter, in collaboration with another social justice organization and community leaders in Springfield. Tenant organizers in Springfield have been fighting for better protections and rights for tenants around dangerous mold, and SftP folks have been providing support with court testimony, research, and the like.
>
> The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has hearings later this month on revisions to the state sanitary code, which is an opportunity to weigh in on the proposed changes to mold rules to strengthen protections for tenants. Obviously, toxic mold in living spaces can cause serious health problems and disproportionately affects poor, black, and POC populations disproportionately. This project embodies the vision of those of us in the Direct Action Network working group, who want to facilitate SftP members partner with community organizers and grassroots campaigns and expand this kind of work in the future.
>
> The hearing in Boston is on September 19, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. in the Public Health Council Room at the Department of Public Health, 250 Washington Street, Boston, MA.
>
> Please reply if you think you can attend this meeting in person. I think it would be really great if someone from your chapter could volunteer to bottom-line organizing attendees from your chapter/area; let me know if you want to volunteer! I'm going to be bringing a group of folks from Worcester, MA to testify, but could loosely coordinate the Boston one as well if no one else has the capacity. If you can't attend, please consider submitting a written comment and reaching out to any contacts in public health, toxicology, or other related fields so that we can collect a lot of comments with a high level of ¨"credibility." I'm attaching talking points the main organizers put together, which can be used to craft written or oral comments.
> The written testimony should follow these guidelines:
>
> The Department encourages all interested parties, including those who testify at the public hearing, to submit written testimony toReg.Testimony at state.ma.us <mailto:Reg.Testimony at state.ma.us>. Submit your testimony as an attached Word document that includes your full name and address and put the number and name of the regulation in the subject line of the email. Do not send pdf or redlined documents. The Department will post on its website all electronic testimony that complies with these instructions. Parties who are unable to submit electronic testimony should mail submissions to Office of the General Counsel, Department of Public Health, 250 Washington Street, Boston, MA 02108. All written or oral comments submitted to the Department may be posted on the Department’s website and released in response to a request for public records. All written testimony must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on September 27, 2019.
>
> Here is the Mass DPH page with info about the hearings: https://www.mass.gov/lists/proposed-amendments-to-regulations-minimum-standards-of-fitness-for-human-habitation <https://www.mass.gov/lists/proposed-amendments-to-regulations-minimum-standards-of-fitness-for-human-habitation>
> Let me know if there are questions. I won't be around for the next meeting, but I hope that you all can put this on the agenda.
>
> Thanks so much!
