*Saturday, October 12, 2019, 4:00 p.m. Book Launch: Democracy Denied by
Victor Wallis*
*encuentro5, 9A Hamilton Place, Boston, MA 02108-4701**

*Democracy Denied* can help a new generation of people of conscience learn
the contours of power and politics in America. It is also hard medicine and
necessary reckoning for all Americans. After all, whose community doesn’t
stand on the precipice of social decay and economic crisis as the world
reels from the effects wrought by U.S. empire?
                                     - Johanna Fernandez

Join Victor Wallis, author of Democracy Denied: Five Lectures on U.S.
Politics (2019) and Red-Green Revolution: The Politics and Technology of
Ecosocialism (2018), and Nino Brown, one of Boston's most consequential
organizers and a leading member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation,
for a conversation about contemporary politics and its roots. This event is
free and open to the community. After a brief introduction, Victor will
speak to the book and his approach to politics. Nino will comment on
Victor's presentation and address upcoming opportunities for activism and
organizing. There will be plenty of time for a serious discussion between
the speakers and attendees. Following the event, encuentro5 is hosting the
October Peña: Dia de la Resistencia Indigena, Dia de Pueblos Indigena.

In her introduction to Victor's latest book, writer Johanna Fernandez,
celebrates Victor's accessible reading of both US history and the roots of
American exceptionalism, noting how it explains the circumscribed character
of contemporary politics. It also relates to the salient features of our
national culture, its preoccupation with guns, immigrant-bashing, and
limiting ballot access, as well as the right-wing resurgence. Importantly
she ratifies Wallis's emphasis on social class, "The possibility of a
class-based offensive, however, remained elusive, but necessary." If his
work looks to history, it because it is also about making history. He is
sober about the prospects of the left within the Democratic Party and its
unwillingness to challenge the politics of empire. At the same time, "the
Left cannot ignore the discussions taking place within the Democratic
Party," and it must "pose a superior position" providing "a pole of
attraction to people" as consciousness evolves and social-environmental
struggles and crises proliferate.

** Regrettably, e5 is not yet wheelchair accessible.*
