As the U.S. war and occupation in Iraq enters its 5th year the anti-war
movement is in a position to have a positive impact in bringing this
devastating war to an end. The majority of the people of this country
and in Iraq are opposed to the war and want the U.S. out of Iraq. We
have a unique opportunity to intervene and move the struggle from
symbolic protests to active resistance. The answer to Bush's escalation
is for the people to take bold initiatives and to take to the streets to
demand "U.S. Out of Iraq! Bring the Troops Home Now! Defund the Pentagon
- Money for Jobs, AIDS, Housing, Healthcare and Education!"
Just as we did for the Dec. 1 Rosa Parks Human Rights Day march and the
demonstration in Boston against the war on March 18, 2006 we will be
reaching out and bringing to the table those who have been most impacted
by the war at home and abroad.
This week the Bush Administration has asked Congress for an additional
$245 billion for the war. This is in addition to over $360 billion in
war funding Congress has approved in a series of votes over the past
three and a half years. This year, it is expected that the Pentagon
budget will exceed $500 billion. From Medicare to New Orleans to Section
8 housing to education to jobs programs, all have been gutted by an
administration and Congress who have diverted funds for these and other
critical programs to fund the war in Iraq and the Pentagon. This is our
money! This is money that has been stolen from poor and working people
especially people of color and we want it back!
Six hundred thousand Iraqis are dead. More than 3,000 U.S. soldiers are
dead and tens of thousands have been wounded. This is not the time to
talk about timetables and "non-binding resolutions" or to get distracted
by 2008 Presidential politics-it's time to take direct action to stop
the war. We call on everyone to support and participate in these
important national and local actions.
