WHATS UP Magazine
Summer 2007 _ Youth Involvement Opportunities
Paid:
1. Business Internships for Youth (2 positions available)
2. Vending positions (multiple positions available)
3. Magazine volunteers(unpaid):writers, artists, event planners, etc..

WHATS UP Magazine (a program of Haley House Inc.) is a non-profit arts and
social justice magazine based in Boston_s South End. The magazine was
founded by a Boston College student in 1997 and has traditionally been sold
by homeless and low-income people in need of extra cash. We are now
expanding our program to work with teens. Our magazine focuses on
positivity and individual voices that are underrepresented in traditional
media. WHATS UP is created primarily by volunteers; we are consensus-based,
and a lot of fun!

1. Business Internship

Interns will work 15-20 hours/week at $8.50/hour; starting July 2 and ending
August 24. Start and end dates are flexible, time off for vacations is
allowed. Internships will be scheduled within the following hours: Monday
9:30am-6pm, Wednesday noon-8pm, Friday 2pm-6pm.

A good portion of the internship will involve leaving the office to do work
around the city, such as dropping off ad packet and test vending. Students
will check in with WHATS UP supervisor in office at start and end of each
workday.

Responsibilities will include help with:

* Advertising sales (dropping off pre-made advertising packets at businesses
around the city, following up with phone calls)

* Youth outreach (going to youth centers as youth ambassadors, speaking with
teens about getting involved with WHATS UP)

* Vendor recruitment (working with other youth, as well as
homeless/low-income folks, going to youth centers, shelters, etc., and
talking about vending for WHATS UP)

* Test vending (trying out new areas for vending, i.e. selling the magazine
on the street)

* Back issue distribution (delivering free back issues to areas of Boston
where WHATS UP needs to get more exposure)

* General office work as needed (helping with grant research, sending out
donor letters, etc.)

We are hiring 2 business interns who will be partnered in a lot of their
work. There will be an orientation where interns will be familiarized with
vending materials, magazine content, and the history and philosophy of the
organization.

We are looking for teens just finishing their junior or senior year in high
school who are outgoing and energetic with good communication skills,
independent workers who are able to juggle multiple tasks/priorities and are
eager to learn. If you have a passion for media and social justice, this is
the place for you!

Business interns are also welcome to attend Wednesday night volunteer
meetings and contribute writing and art to the magazine; they would work
with editors through the same process that all volunteers work with editors
(mostly via email).

To apply, email your work experience and reasons for interest in the
position to Kathy Ferguson, Program Director, at mail at whatsupmagazine.org.
Please feel free to email or call with questions (617-267-1575). We look
forward to hearing from you!

2. Vending Positions

Anyone 14 and older can be a WHATS UP vendor! Vending WHATS UP means
selling the magazine on the street. We start vendors with 20 free magazines
so they can try it out, and then vendors buy each issue for $.25 and sell
them on the street for $1, keeping all profits. Free issues are given for
volunteer involvement (such as contributing content, or attending weekly
meetings).

Vendors can sell magazines where and when they prefer; you make your own
hours and route. You can work in pairs/groups if you_d like. A training is
provided and vendors check in with our Program Director each time they come
to the office to buy more magazines. We also have regular vendor support
meetings for all vendors to share sales tips and give input to the Program
Director about the vendor program.

These positions are open year-round and no previous work experience is
necessary. To apply, simply visit the WHATS UP office during the following
hours:

Mondays 9:30am-6pm
Wednesdays noon-8pm
Fridays 2pm-6pm

You may email or call with questions as well _ contact Kathy Ferguson,
617-267-1575, mail at whatsupmagazine.org.

3. Magazine volunteers

WHATS UP is a creative outlet for young artists and writers. We welcome all
types of submissions (articles, interviews, poetry, illustrations, comics,
etc.) and have a young, enthusiastic, very cool editorial staff. The
deadline for our October/November Issue is August 1 (the theme will be
_faith and spirits_), though we accept submissions at any time. Submissions
do not have to be about the issue topic. You can submit via email or mail,
and feel free to call with questions. Weekly volunteer meetings are every
Wednesday at 6:30pm at our office and are open to all who are interested in
brainstorming and meeting our diverse and welcoming volunteer community.
