  Commemorating International Migrant Day
  Tuesday, December 18, 2007 - 7pm

  In 1997, Filipino and other Asian migrant organizations began celebrating and promoting the 18th of December as the International Day of Solidarity with Migrants. This date was chosen because it was on 18th December 1990 that the United Nations adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of all Migrants Workers and Members of Their Families. 

  The UN proclamation of the International Migrant's Day is an important step, offering a rallying point for everyone across the world who is concerned with the protection of migrants. The UN invited all UN member states, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations to observe this day by disseminating information on human rights and fundamental freedoms of migrants, sharing experiences, and undertaking action to ensure the protection of migrants. 

  The United States and the members of the European Union, however, have not signed nor supported the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of all Migrant Workers and Members of their Families. For these wealthy countries, this is consistent with their policies of encouraging undocumented immigration in order to super-exploit the labor of an underground working class. It is also ironic that one of the main reasons of forced migration of workers from their countries of origin has to do with the policies and actions of wealthy countries over Third World countries. 

  The United States alone allowed the entrance of nearly 12 million undocumented migrant workers in 10 years, who have contributed billions of dollars to the U.S. economy. Yet, the two parties in power, democrats and republicans, refuse to provide a legal solution to undocumented migrant workers, choosing instead to step up the repression of undocumented workers through raids, detentions, deportations and a systematic campaign to present undocumented migrants as criminals. In fact, the Bush administration has declared an all-out war against immigrants. 

  A group of panelists including Lucy Pineda (Latinos Unidos de Massachusetts, LUMA), Gabriel Camacho (AFSC Project Voice), Dorotea Manuela (Boston May Day Coalition), Patricia Montes (Centro Presente, Cambridge), and representatives from the National Lawyers Guild, Massachusetts Chapter and of Jobs with Justice, Immigrant Workers Rights Committee, will share their experiences in organizing for migrant workers rights. We will also discuss the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of all Migrants Workers and Members of Their Families, and the transnational responsibilities and organizing efforts to secure that migrant workers everywhere are treated with respect as human beings who with their labor and culture contribute greatly to the countries where they arrive in search of work.

  En 1997, organizaciones de emigrantes de Filipinas y Asia empezaron a celebrar y promover el día 18 de diciembre como el Día Internacional en Solidaridad con los Emigrantes. Esta fecha fue escogida porque fue el 18 de diciembre de 1990 cuando las Naciones Unidas adoptaron la Convención Internacional para la Protección de los Trabajadores Emigrantes y los Miembros de sus Familias.

  El establecimiento del Día Internacional de los Emigrantes es un paso importante como punto de encuentro a través de todo el mundo para aquellos que están preocupados con la protección de los derechos de los emigrantes. Las Naciones Unidas invitaron a todos los países miembros, y las organizaciones intergubernamentales, y no-gubernamentales a observar este día para diseminar información sobre los derechos humanos y libertades fundamentales de los emigrantes, compartir experiencias, y tomar acción para asegurar la protección de los emigrantes.

  Sin embargo, los Estados Unidos y los países Europeos no han firmado ni han apoyado la Convención aquí mencionada. Para estos países ricos esto es consistente con sus políticas de promover en la práctica la emigración indocumentada para súper-explotar el trabajo de una clase sometida a la clandestinidad. Es también irónico que una de las principales razones para la emigración forzada de trabajadores desde sus países de origen ha sido las políticas y las acciones de los países ricos sobre los países del tercer mundo.

  Los EE.UU. han permitido el ingreso de 12 millones de trabajadores emigrantes indocumentados en 10 años, los que han contribuido billones de dólares a la economía estadounidense. Aun así, los dos partidos en el poder, demócratas y republicanos, rehúsan proveer una solución a la situación de los trabajadores emigrantes indocumentados, escogiendo en vez aplicar la represión contra ellos por medio de redadas, detenciones y deportaciones, y una sistemática campaña para presentar a los trabajadores emigrantes indocumentados como criminales. De hecho, el gobierno de Bush parece haber declarado una verdadera guerra en contra de los emigrantes.

  Un grupo de panelistas que incluyen a Lucy Pineda (Latinos Unidos de Massachussets, LUMA), Gabriel Camacho (AFSC Proyecto Voz), Dorotea Manuela (Coalición Primero de Mayo de Boston), Patricia Montes (Centro Presente, Cambridge), y representantes de Lawyers Guild, Massachussets y de Trabajo con Justicia, Comité por los Derechos de los Trabajadores Emigrantes, compartirán sus experiencias en la organización por los derechos de los trabajadores emigrantes. También analizaremos la Convención Internacional por los Derechos de los Emigrantes, y las responsabilidades a nivel transnacional para organizar y asegurar que los trabajadores emigrantes en todo el mundo sean tratados con respeto, como seres humanos que con su trabajo y sus culturas contribuyen grandemente a los países donde llegan en busca de trabajo.
