Hi all,
As those of you who have met me, you know I am relatively re-new to the Boston area and am sending this to you all in hopes that you might be interested or have some friends/contacts who might be...
I translated for a parent/teacher last night at one of the Boston Public Schools. There was a HUGE need for interpreters and some of the conversations that I was interpreting for strongly represented a funky power difference between the teachers and the parents.
It got me to thinking how it would be great to find -or create if it's not already out there in the Boston area- an interpreters collective. I imagine a group of people who care quite a bit about eliminating power differences through offering their interpreting abilities.
I work primarily in Spanish-English, but I imagine there's a need for Portuguese- English, Cape Verdean Kriolu-English, Haitian Creole- English, etc..... and while I know there are some formal translation organizations and lots of informal, family, etc. it would be great to work with a collective of people to share strategies, ideas, support and offer our time in a volunteer capacity for specific events/situations- perhaps especially within a public school setting?
So if you would be interested in participating in something like this, or know of something already going on, or know someone who'd be down for it, I'd love to get connected with them.
Thanks for helping to share this idea-
Corry
