THE COMMUNITY CHURCH OF BOSTON
SUNDAY SPEAKERS FORUM presents...

Sunday, February 1, 2009 at 11:00am

Superbowl Sunday
MEGHAN O. MAHONEY
"All the Sports World's a Stage and All the Athletes MORE than Merely
Players!"

Meghan Mahoney serves as manager of operations at Sport in Society--a
Northeastern University Center--where she is responsible for ensuring
productive, efficient internal activities and external advocacy. Previously,
she spent a year researching the international development of women's ice
hockey in Denmark, New Zealand & South Africa. Meghan was a four-year
varsity ice hockey player and team captain at the College of the Holy Cross,
where she graduated in 2005.

Paraphrasing Shakespeare, she observes that sport is perhaps a more closely
watched and revered stage than any other. As pure an escape as the general
audience wishes sport to be, athletes are intrinsically connected to the
larger world in both their daily lives and their place on this great stage.
What happens when athletes not only recognize this connection, but use their
positions to draw attention to the stark realities that exist within sport
and in the greater community? What would it take for tonight's winning
quarterback, say, to use his spotlight to speak up for human rights? What is
his responsibility to do so, and how would we react if he did?
