is the announcement for the forum this Friday, June 5.  The previously scheduled forum on Jose Marti
and the Fight for Cuban Independence (which some of you may have received
notice of in the mail)  has been
postponed to respond to the events in Wichita this week.  
Also,
on Saturday, June 6 distributors of the Militant newspaper will be at the
Harlem Book Fair in front of the Dudley Branch Library from 12 to about 4 p.m.
with the current issue of the Militant and a display of Pathfinder books.  (The new issue of the Militant will have
coverage from Wichita in response to the attack on abortion rights and the
murder of Dr. Tiller.) Please come by and visit!

The Militant Labor Forum presents:

Speak Out In Defense of Abortion Rights and Against the 
Murder of Dr. George Tiller 

Right-wing
forces have made Wichita a center of the fight for abortion rights since the
1980s. Tiller, a Wichita doctor who provided abortions, had been the focus of
many of the antiwomen protests. 

Many
supporters of abortion rights mobilized during 1991 in defense of women
exercising their right to choose an abortion and of Dr. Tiller's clinic during
the siege of Wichita organized by Operation Rescue. In 1993, Tiller was shot by
an antiabortion activist in both of his arms. 

Earlier
this year, jurors in Wichita acquitted Tiller on charges that he broke a Kansas
law restricting how late-term abortions should be handled. Women's Health Care
Services, which Tiller ran, is one of only three clinics in the United States
that perform late-term abortions. Hundreds of women, who have no access to
abortion services in their home states, travel to Wichita to obtain abortions.

Join
a discussion on the history of the fight to defeat the attacks on abortion
rights, from Wichita to Boston, and the battles for women’s rights today. 

Panel in formation -- among the speakers will be
William Leonard, who participated in defense of the Wichita clinic in the 1990s
and will be returning from Wichita with an eyewitness report of the current
situation.  Leonard is the Socialist
Workers candidate for mayor of Boston.

Las fuerzas de la derecha han hecho Wichita, Kansas un
centro de la lucha por el derecho al aborto desde el decenio de 1980. Dr.
George Tiller, un
médico de Wichita que proporcionó abortos, había sido el foco de muchas de las
protestas de anti-mujer.

Muchos partidarios de derechos al aborto movilizaron durante 1991 en defensa de
las mujeres que ejercen su derecho a elegir un aborto y de la clínica del Dr.
Tiller durante el asedio de Wichita, organizada por la Operación Rescate. En 1993,
Tiller fue baleado por una activista antiaborto en sus dos brazos. 

Más temprano este año,
los jurados en Wichita absolvieron Tiller de cargas que él rompió una ley de
Kansas que restringe cómo abortos de tarde-término deben ser manejados.Women's
