Tell Mayor Menino,Gov. Patrick & the Legislature
NO Charter Schools!*
* *Equal, Quality, Public Education is a Right!*
* *FULL funding for Boston's Public Schools NOW!*
* *NO to the Privatization of Public Schools!*
* *Stop the 5-Zone Plan to Further the Re-Segregation of Boston
Schools!*
* *Stop Union busting!*
* *Bail Out the Schools Not the Banks!*
*Tuesday, July 21 - 12:30 pm*
*Mass. State House - Hearing Room 1A*
There will be a hearing on Menino's home rule petition to allow the
Menino's hand-picked School Committee to declare that a Boston Public
School in "under performing" and convert it into an "In-District"
Charter School. This same School Committee will have the power to bust
all unions representing teachers and other workers within the Charter
School.
In addition Gov. Patrick has announced his plans to increase the number
of Charter Schools within Massachusetts and the federal government is
threatening to withhold stimulus funds from any states that refuse to
support the expansion of charters.
/*Charter Schools:*/
* *accept only the top students* to boost their test scores
* *take funding away from the already underfunded Boston Public Schools*
* *do not provide the necessary services for ELL and Special
Education students* - a higher precentage of ELL & Special
Education students stay in public schools
* *create a 2-tier education system* - one for privileged students
(charters) & one for everyone else (BPS)
* *have a higher rate of teacher turnover*
* *are union busters* - there is no union protection for teachers or
other school employees
As Parents, Community Members, Educators, and Students we need to unite
and fight back against the proposed increase in Charter Schools. In
cities throught the country people are standing up and exposing the
truth behind the charter school corporations. The answer to providing
the youth of Boston equal quality education is not by handing over the
schools to private corporations, many of which are out to make a profit.
It's time to stop spending trillions on war and bank bailouts! We need
to demand:
* *equal qualty education for ALL students!*
* *full funding for programs & staff (no layoffs) *
* *an end to the use of standardized tests such as MCAS to judge
whether or not schools and teachers are doing their job!*
* *stop scapegoating teachers!*
* *that BPS provide the programs that will prepare the youth of
Boston for college*
