*Dear All,

Harvard University announced hundreds of layoffs just as many students and
faculty were leaving for the summer. Activists believe as many as 1,000
workers may have actually lost their Harvard jobs in recent months,
including retirees trying to supplement their social security,
super-exploited "less-than-half-time" workers with no union representation
and few or no benefits, and outsourced contract employees. Recently 103
outsourced custodians had their hours and pay slashed by 12.5%; another
group of 20 custodians also had their hours and pay cut. These manual
laborers will be expected to do the same backbreaking work in less time for
less money!

Make no mistake--Harvard's cuts will deeply hurt workers and their families.
Lives will be ruined and social problems magnified. The irony is that
Harvard is considered a "non-profit" and enjoys special tax advantages.
These special benefits are being repaid with mass layoffs and cuts during a
major economic recession, even though Harvard's massive endowment hasn't
fallen as much as anticipated (and despite an extremely risky investment
strategy).

Workers, students, faculty, and neighborhood activists say: Stop the cuts!
Rehire the terminated workers! Please join us as we PICKET Harvard's Holyoke
Center, 1350 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, steps from the Harvard T. Our action
will take place this Thursday, August 6, at 12:30 p.m. ALL ARE WELCOME!

In Solidarity,

Geoff Carens, Union Rep, HUCTW/AFSCME local 3650
