THE COMMUNITY CHURCH OF BOSTON
SUNDAY SPEAKERS FORUM presents...
Sunday, October 4th, 2009
11:00am
Indigenous Peoples' Day
"TANTANKA WOPILA" ("Thank You, Buffalo Nation")
We will watch and discuss this 20-minute video about the extermination of
the Buffalo and how it was carried out by the U.S. government, led by Gen.
William Sherman, to starve all Native Americans they could not defeat in
war. By the late 1800s/early 1900s, the last surviving herd in North America
was in Yellowstone National Park--the grandparents of most of today's
existing herds. However, they are now threatened by the Cattle Associations
of Wyoming, Montana, North & South Dakota, which want unchallenged use of
the park. The transparent excuse is that the Buffalo have a disease which
can be passed on to cattle.
This documentary was filmed on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in South
Dakota and introduced by Arvol Looking Horse, Keeper of the White Buffalo
Calf Pipe. Among those speaking on behalf of the Buffalo are several
well-known Native actors ("Dances with Wolves", etc.).
Music and commentary by Tim Swallow.
