Join Boston WILPF and local Congolese activists at a vigil to raise
awareness of the devastating war in the Democratic Republic of Congo
and the sexual violence accompanying it. It will take place on
Saturday, October 10 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM in Harvard Square to begin
"Breaking the Silence/Congo Week”(the rain date is Sunday, October 11
from 2:00 to 4:00 PM).

Muslim Cool" • Sackler Museum, Harvard University, Cambridge

A new documentary by Jennifer Maytorena Taylor, "New Muslim Cool"
tells the true life story of Hamza Pérez, a Puerto Rican American hip
hop artist who converted to Islam at age 21, pulling himself off the
streets to become a community activist and rising star. Forging
unlikely friendships with a Jewish poet, a prison chaplain, and many
others along his surprising spiritual journey, Hamza faces challenges
with a message of hope, finding his balance in a world that never
stops changing. Before the screening, the Sackler Museum will offer
extended hours (until 6PM) for the special exhibit Sacred Spaces: The
World of Dervishes, Fakirs and Sufis, which is on view through January
3, 2010.

graduates from the School of the Americas in the Coup d'état in
Honduras and Venezuela
With Lisa Sullivan (Latin America Coordinator, School of the Americas
Watch) and Omar Sierra (Consul General in Boston, Republic of
Venezuela)
Lisa Sullivan has lived for in Latin America since 1977. She worked
for 21 years as a Maryknoll lay missioner in Venezuela and Bolivia,
and is the founder of the grassroots leadership group, Centro de
Formación Rutilio Grande. Lisa is currently the coordinator for
Partnership America Latina (PAL). Lisa works to connect North and
South partners in the movement to close the School of the Americas and
promote peace in the region, and has helped to organize numerous SOAW
delegations to meet with leaders in Latin America, leading to the
withdrawal of five countries from the SOA.

As part of the Boston Interfaith Film Series, Coexistence
International will host a screening of the inspiring documentary film
"Pray the Devil Back to Hell" (2008), an award winning film by Gini
Reticker and Abigail F. Disney.
It is the story of a group of Liberian women who were instrumental in
bringing peace to their country after decades of civil war. It
chronicles the development of this interfaith women's movement amidst
intense violence and poverty, and we hear the compelling stories of
the movement's leaders. The Liberian women's peace movement provides a
stunning example of the unifying power and resilience of grassroots
activism.
Janet Johnson Bryant, a Liberian journalist who was one of the leaders
of the movement, will be present at the event.
