*Dear All,
In nearly twenty years as a union rep, I've never seen a case like that of
Ravi Raj, member of the Harvard Union of Clerical and Technical Workers.
Ravi has suffered sickening racial slurs and having his Indian accent mocked
on the job. When he complained of discrimination, managers in his workplace
began a relentless effort to drive Ravi out of his job. Despite the highest
production among his peers, and many written compliments from customers
about Ravi's work, he has been disciplined twice for poor performance. Right
before a meeting planned so Ravi could make a formal complaint of
discrimination, a thug was sent to threaten him (more details on Ravi's case
here: http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=529193). When the union
refuted the unfair criticism of Ravi's work, local managers apparently
decided to try another approach. Ravi was falsely accused of sending a
"threatening" email to a co-worker, although the message in question came
from an account Ravi has never used. He was banned from campus and put on
administrative leave. There is the clear danger he could be fired in the
coming days. PLEASE COME to our action for Ravi, this Tuesday, October 13,
at 12:30 p.m., in front of Harvard's Holyoke Center, 1350 Mass. Ave. in
Cambridge, next to Au Bon Pain and steps from the Harvard T stop. A flyer
for the rally is attached. Please forward widely!
In Solidarity,
Geoff Carens, Union Rep, HUCTW/AFSCME local 3650
