Alternatives to Capitalism in Crisis: Counter-hegemonic economies in contemporary Catalonia
Saturday March 6th, 7 pm
Lucy Parsons Center
549 Columbus Avenue
In September 2008 Barcelona-based anticapitalist Enric Duran announced he had expropriated 492,000 euros by taking out loans he never intended to pay back. Announced with the publication of 200,000 free newspapers, the action helped launch a Podem, a region-wide campaign promoting alternatives to capitalism that combines the tradition of Catalan anarchism, the theory of “de-growth,” and the alternative currency movement. Scott Pinkelman, one of the group’s English translators, will share some insights from a recent trip to Catalonia.
This project was supported by a grant from the Institute for Anarchist Studies; donations to support future radical scholarship will be accepted.
Scott is a media activist and translator based in Philadelphia.
