                           HUMANIST OF THE YEAR

         Recipient:  BARRY BLUESTONE, Dean School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs
                         Northeastern University, and Director, Dukakis Center for Urban and 
                         Regional Policy, Northeastern University

         Program Title: THE UNIVERSITY AS AN ANCHOR INSTITUTION IN THE COMMUNITY


          Once an "ivory tower", the modern urban university has the opportunity and responsibility 
          to become an acnhor institution in the community, providing applied research to address the 
          range of challenges that cities and towns face.  A model of social change is evolving where the 
         university plays a critcal role in addressing such problems as affordable housing., local economic
         development, and sustainablity.
