CCI Lunch Time Conversations about Race & Racism:
Issues That Matter to Boston (and beyond)
IMMIGRATION REFORM POLICY --
JUST & HUMANE? -- OR MASSIVE DEPORTATION PIPELINE?
MAY 19 (Wed)
Noon-1:30 p.m.
The Community Change Library on Racism
14 Beacon Street, Room 604
By 2009, over half the people detained and deported by Immigration and
Customs Enforcement (ICE) were scooped up through new programs that
were supposed to focus on catching dangerous criminals. Yet, the
majority had no criminal records at all. There?s no indication that
the bipartisan reform bill Sens. Schumer and Graham have been drafting
will alter this course. BUT two existing bills are examples of true
change: Rep. Luiz Gutierrez?s Comprehensive Immigration Reform ASAP
bill in the House and the Refugee Protection Act in the Senate.*
On May 19, our guests, PATRICIA MONTES, Executive Director of Centro
Presente, and GABRIEL CAMACHO, Board President, Centro Presente, will
share with us their political position on the immigration legislation
currently before the U.S. Congress. They will also describe the
collective actions we can take to support a real, just and humane
immigration reform.
Established in 1981, Centro Presente is a member-driven, state-wide
Latin American immigrant organization dedicated to the
self-determination and self-sufficiency of the Latin American
immigrant community of Massachusetts. Operated and led primarily by
Central American immigrants, Centro Presente struggles for immigrant
rights and for economic and social justice. Through the integration of
community organizing, leadership development and basic services,
Centro Presente strives to give our members voice and build community
power.

Community Change, Inc. was born out of the Civil Rights Movement and
in response to the Kerner Commission which named racism as "a white
problem." Since 1968, CCI has done what few organizations are willing
to do: shine a spotlight on the roots of racism in white culture with
the intention of dealing with racism at its source, as well as with
its impact on communities of color.
