(Somerville & Cambridge, MA)  In 2006, the very first HONK! Festival was an
experiment, a not so humble occasion created on Columbus Day weekend for 12
activist street bands to perform in Davis and Harvard Squares.  By 2009,
HONK! burst at the seams with over 29 bands [stopped counting for all the
impromptu participants] - and by magic along the way, between 2006 and 2010,
annual HONKS! have arisen in places as close as Providence (PRONK!) and
Brooklyn (BONK!) and as far afield as Seattle (HONK! Fest West), with new
ones being launched every day, such as in Austin (HONK! TX).

The original HONK! Festival ended up being a good idea.  A need had been
identified, not only on the part of musicians - of a particular persuasion -
who have a penchant for gathering to raise a righteous ruckus.  But also a
need is there on the part of the audience - not necessarily of any
persuasion - to bask in the glow of this unusual phenomenon.

A Wikipedia page has been developed to try and describe the nature of HONK!
- but there's nothing like being there.  As the ultimate activist Emma
Goldman so wisely put it:  "If I can't dance, I don't want to be in your
revolution."  The operative word here is dance and the HONK! Festival sets
the tone for grooving it to the streets.

The Somerville-based HONK! Committee is working fast and furious to solidify
plans for this year's 5th annual HONK! Festival with periodic updates posted
on www.honkfest.org <http://www.honkfest.org/> , twitter.com/honkfest/, and
www.facebook.com/honkfestival.  Further information can also be obtained by

By early September, the wheels will be set in full motion for HONK! Festival
2010, to be held from October 8-10, with HONK! outdoor band concerts held
throughout Davis Square on October 9th, a "Reclaim the Streets for Horns,
Bikes, and Feet" Parade travelling from Davis Square to Harvard Square on
October 10th, and participation in Harvard Square's Oktoberfest on October
10th.  [Individuals or groups who are interested in participating

Leading up to this year's Columbus Day weekend events, which will also
include several collaborative workshops with Boston-area Boys & Girls clubs
on October 8th and a grand finale concert at the Somerville Theatre on
October 10th, there are several preliminary events worth noting:

Thursday, September 2 through Thursday, September 30, 2010:
The Inside-Outside Gallery (aka the CVS windows in Davis Square, Somerville)
will feature 8 photographers: Greg Cook, Tiffany Knight, Mark Dannenhauer,
Aaron Donovan, Jesse Edsell-Vetter, Dennis O'Reilly, Benjamin Greenberg,
Chris Yeager & Akos Szilvasi. Their photos are inspired by the HONK!
Festival and will be on display throughout the month of September.  An
outdoor opening reception is planned for Saturday, Sept 4th, from 6-8 pm.

Monday, September 13, 7-8:30 pm:
We Love HONK! Volunteers Meeting.  Sign-up to help in all the ways that make

Tuesday, September 21, 10 am-11 pm:
Flatbread Pizza For HONK! Benefit, all day, with a special 7:30 pm
performance by the Second Line Social Aid & Pleasure Society Brass Band.
Flatbread in Somerville is donating a portion of the cost of every pizza pie
purchased during the day to the HONK! Festival.  Flatbread Company, 45 Day

As often as bands congregate to HONK in protest, they also perform to
celebrate the causes and institutions they support: multicultural festivals,
peace conferences, social forums, artists' collectives, community gardens,
block parties, neighborhood fundraisers, relief benefits and homeless
shelters.  In every case, the HONKers' ultimate goal is to have fun, to
relish the art of making fun as a form of individual and collective
transcendence, and to encourage others to see and do the same.

At this early stage of the game, the HONK! Festival Committee would like to
give special thanks to the City of Somerville and the Somerville Arts
Council for their support of this year's HONK! Festival!
