*RI group to protest FBI raids on the antiwar movement*

The RI Mobilization Committee to Stop War and Occupation (RIMC) has called
for a protest of the recent FBI raids on the antiwar movement in Minneapolis
and other cities. The protest will be held outside the Federal Building
in Providence, this Wednesday, September 29 from 5 to 6 PM. Similar
protests are being held around the country this week to oppose FBI
intimidation of the antiwar movement and defend freedom of speech.

On the morning of September 24, FBI agents armed with grand jury subpoenas
raided the homes of several antiwar and social justice activists in
Minnesota, Michigan and Illinois. Using the pretext of investigating
“terrorism,” and with “possibly providing material aid to terrorists,” the
FBI agents – 20 in the Twin Cities and 12 in Chicago – were armed with
search and seizure warrants. They seized computers, cell phones, political
leaflets and other printed materials, as well as personal belongings.

The activists were ordered to appear before grand juries in various cities
investigating criminal activity and possible association with “terrorist”
organizations. In a recent statement, the United National Antiwar Committee
denounced the government’s raids, seizures and subpoenas as an attack on the
entire antiwar movement and all organizations seeking social justice and an
end to U.S. wars of intervention around the world.

The New York Times covered the story in this article:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/25/us/politics/25search.html?_r=1&hpw

Martha Yager, Program Coordinator for the American Friends Service Committee
(AFSC) in Southeast New England, and a member of RIMC, has been to
Palestine, and the AFSC, a large international organization, is one of the
groups that has been harrassed by the FBI.

The demands for the protest in Providence are: 1) Stop the repression
against antiwar and international solidarity activists; 2) Immediately
return all confiscated materials: computers, cell phones, papers, documents,
etc.; and 3) End the grand jury proceedings and FBI raids against all
antiwar activists.

RIMC is urging everyone who supports civil liberties to join us at the
Federal Building in Providence on Wednesday at 5:00 PM to oppose government
harassment of the antiwar movement and support freedom of speech.
