Friends,

Two important events--one on Colombia & Coal; the other on Social
Movements & the State--follow up on our successful forum on Climate
Change with representatives from Bolivia and Venezuela (we'll post the
video soon). Both events are at encuentro 5. Visit the website
[http://www.encuentro5.org] for directions, more details and other
interesting event info (especially, this weekend's meeting of the War
Resisters' League).

1.José Brito: A Coal Miner Speaks! (http://www.encuentro5.org/home/node/162)

Thursday, November 4, 2010, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. José Brito formerly
worked at the Cerrejon mine in Colombia. He is a trade unionist
representing thousands of workers at giant surface strip-mines. The
Drummond and Cerejon mines produce 90% of Colombian coal exports.
These help fire Massachusetts' Salem and Somerset electrical
generating plants in addition to other generating stations in the
United States. A growing US network acts in solidarity with the unions
and communities surrounding the mines. The latter have been severely
and negatively impacted by the mines. This event will connect you with
the coal miners and their allies in Eastern Massachusetts. [see below
for other events with José]

2. Raúl Zibechi: Dispersing Power (http://www.encuentro5.org/home/node/164)

Monday, November 8, 2010, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Join Uruguayan
activist-intellectual and journalist, Raúl Zibechi, for a wide-ranging
conversation about social movements and social change. The point of
departure is his latest work, Dispersing Power: Social Movements as
Anti-State Forces. It considers the largely indigenous social
movements organizing in El Alto, Bolivia that both brought Evo Morales
to state power and continue their challenges to the state. This event
is co-sponsored with Boston Bolivarianos, the Boston May Day
Committee, the Global Economic Alternatives Network and the journal
Socialism and Democracy.
