The Militant Labor Forumpresents:
Cuba’s Role in the Fight to End Apartheid in South Africa
    In March 1988 the combined forces of Cuban volunteers, the Angolan army and 
fighters from the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) of Namibia, 
dealt a decisive military defeat to South Africa’s invading troops at the battle 
of Cuito Cuanavale in Angola.
   That victory led to the independence of Namibia, and in the following years 
the unbanning of the African National Congress and the freeing of Nelson Mandela 
from prison. But this history and the key role played by Cuba is not well known.

En marzo de 1988 las fuerzas combinadas de los voluntarios cubanos, del ejército 
angolano y de combatientes de la organización de gente del sur de las Áfricas 
occidentales (SWAPO) de Namibia, repartieron una derrota militar decisiva a las 
tropas invasoras de Suráfrica en la batalla de Cuito Cuanavale. 

Esa victoria llevó a la independencia de Namibia, y en los años siguientes 
legalizando el congreso nacional africano y  liberarando Nelson Mandela de la 
prisión. Pero esta historia y el papel importante desempeñado por Cuba no es 
bien conocido.
