2011.

Lynn Nottage's powerful Pulitzer-Prize-winning play is set in the eastern
Democratic Republic of Congo where the country and its people, especially its
women, are being devastated by horrific war and sexual violence.

Savvy business woman Mama Nadi knows how to survive in the midst of the Congo
civil war: don’t take sides. She sells beers and girls to any man who'll leave
his gun at the door. The good-time atmosphere of the canteen and her sharp wits
can’t always protect her and her girls, but their courage, humor, and hope
live on in this gripping drama.

“Sincere, passionate, and courageous, Ruined is a remarkable theatrical
accomplishment.” — Chicago Tribune

“The first time I saw Ruined, I was simply unable to hold back tears. Lynn
Nottage has created an astonishing, enduring piece of writing that should be
seen by everyone. The play is unflinching, emotionally cathartic, and absolutely
revelatory.” — Peter DuBois

Members of Congo Action Now [5] (a project of Women's International League for
Peace and Freedom - Boston Branch [6]) will facilitate discussions of the issues
raised by the play after the following performances: Jan. 9 7pm; Jan. 16 2pm;
Jan. 21 8pm; Jan. 22 2pm; Jan. 28 8pm; Jan. 29 2pm; Feb. 5 2pm.   Post-show
audience conversations after other performances may also be facilitated by other
area scholars, aid workers, journalists, or experts.
