It is now close to a year since the lives of 300,000 people were claimed by
the devastating earthquake that struck the country on January 12, 2010. Since
then the corrupt and dysfunctional Haitian government has failed to provide
basic health care, schools, housing, and infrastructure. The billions
raised for relief have failed to alleviate the people’s suffering, and 1.6
million homeless people are still living in tents. The Trade
Unionists, university
students, and residents of the camps who have opposed these conditions have
faced severe political repression from MINUSTAH (the U.N. “peace-keeping
force) as well as the Haitian government. And, the U.S. has failed to
fulfill its promise (made by Hillary Clinton) to provide Haiti funds for
long-term construction. According to the Huffington Post 9/29/10) “not a
cent of the $1.15 billion has arrived.” The criminal neglect of the Haitian
people today, which is a continuation of centuries of colonialist and
imperialist domination, must be exposed—as well as those who are most
responsible: the U.S. and Haitian governments.
