Jafar Panahi was recently sentenced to six years in jail and a twenty-year ban on filmmaking, communication with the press and traveling. His films tell stories about regular people who struggle with Iran's draconian policies. The 2006 film Offside, which has received a lot of enthusiastic reviews, portrays a group of women who disguise themselves as men in order to attend a World Cup final -- an activity that is limited to male spectators. (Another reason for this choice is the "war on women" being waged in the States right now. How long before we approach Iran's absurdity?)

16mm print of Harlan County USA in solidarity with Wisconsin workers

As a show of solidarity with the workers in Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, and other places where their right to demand fair treatment is under question, we will be projecting a 16mm print of the 1976 Academy Award-winning documentary classic Harlan County, USA. The film covers the 1972 coal miners strike against the Duke Power Company, in Harlan County, Kentucky, in their battle for fair wages and safer working conditions. Director Barbara Kopple spent years filming the coal miners and their families, providing a very intimate look into the exploitation and antagonism they faced, even capturing an actual shooting on film. There is some amazing local music throughout, as well.
