The Coolidge Corner Theatre is proud to present an evening of performance by
legendary Cuban singer-songwriter Carlos Varela and his band on Thurs, June
16 at 7pm. One of the most outspoken singer-songwriters of his generation,
Varela is often dubbed “Cuba’s Bob Dylan”. For more than 20 years, he has
been drawing thousands of passionate fans to his shows, even when his songs
have been banned from Cuban radio.

Varela’s music combines Cuba’s Nueva Trova tradition of richly poetic,
socially conscious lyrics with an innovative fusion of folk, rock, and pop,
along with traditional Cuban son and guajira rhythms. Upbeat, defiant,
soothing, soulful, he can rock the audience one moment and break their
hearts the next with his beautiful, haunting songs about love, loss,
freedom, hope, and the realities of life in post-revolutionary Cuba. His
music has given voice to Cubans who long for change and a greater connection
to the outside world.

A riveting performer, Varela has shared the stage with a wide range of
musicians, including Luis Enrique, Francisco Céspedes, Joaquín Sabina,
Silvio Rodriguez, Miguel Bosé, Los Van Van, Bonnie Raitt, Ruben Blades, and
Sting, and Jackson Browne

Tickets are $15 general admission/$12 Coolidge members and students and are
available online at www.coolidge.org <http://www.coolidge.org/> or at the
Coolidge box office, 290 Harvard Street, Brookline.
