 Workers Resist in the Midwest
Report back from the Red River Valley 
American Crystal Sugar workers’ fight
Some 1,300 members of the Bakery, Confectionery,
Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union have been locked out by
American Crystal Sugar since August 1, after they rejected the bosses’ “final”
offer. The unionists are fighting back at the five plants, in the Red River
Valley region of Minnesota and North Dakota.
With the sugar beet harvest
under way, locked-out sugar workers are standing firm with around-the-clock
pickets, and rallies; solidarity continues to be organized across the region.
The bosses cut off health insurance and brought in vanloads of replacement workers, beginning on the first day. The push for
profits over safety and the inexperience of those workers resulted in three
fires in a recent 48-hour period.

 Más de 1 300 trabajadores de American Sugar Crystal están enfrentando un cierre patronal en cinco plantas en los estados de Minnesota y Dakota del Norte. Los miembros del sindicato de trabajadores procesadores de granos (BCTGM) rechazaron la oferta “final” de los patrones el 30 de julio. La compañía cerró sus puertas a los trabajadores dos días después contrató a esquiroles.
