THE COMMUNITY CHURCH OF BOSTON
SUNDAY SPEAKERS FORUM presents...

Sunday, January 15th, 2012
11:00am

Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.
ALEXANDER LYNN & MEGHAN DORAN
"Boston Busing/Desegregation Project: For Truth, Learning, and Change"

The need to discuss the history of busing/desegregation in Boston is made
abundantly clear when one looks at the reality of segregation in Boston
Public Schools today. When the white mayor, Thomas Menino, can tell the
Boston Globe that he is not interested in discussing those days because he
already lived through it, we know that truth telling, community learning,
and systemic change are as important as ever.

The Boston Busing/Desegregation Project grew from the Union of Minority
Neighborhoods' attempts to organize Black parents around public school
education. This effort revealed race and class dynamics that are barriers to
creating a public education system that works for all. UMN realized a need
to revisit the period of busing and desegregation in Boston. The project is
gathering knowledge from written history, individuals, and communities. The
process moves past old misunderstandings and builds on successes and shared
values. This discussion will be another opportunity to hear about and
participate in the work.
