Criminal Injustice: The High Cost of 3-Strikes Laws in Massachusetts.
 Friday, January 27th, 7-9 PM @ First Church of Jamaica Plain, 6 Eliot
St, Boston, MA. A panel discussion on the potential repercussions of
the 3-Strike law for MA, featuring Representative Liz Malia; Jamahrl
Crawford of Occupy the Hood Boston and editor,the Blackstonian;
Harvard Law Professor and former US District Court Justice Nancy
Gertner. Moderator: Ben Thompson, Executive Director of the Criminal
Justice Policy Coalition.

Mass. is confining 300 percent more prisoners than in 1983, and has
severe prison overcrowding.It is already one of the 6 states in the
country with the most prisoners confined for life. Each prisoner
spending 40 years in prison costs the Commonwealth about $1,500,000.
Proposed mandatory sentencing provisions would indeed confine
dangerous, violent criminals, but would also sweep large numbers of
non-violent offenders into very long confinements, which would
disproportionately impact poor minorities in the inner city and lead
to tens of millions of dollars in additional state prison
expenditures.
