Challenging the Pivot: The U.S., China, & Alternatives to Asia-Pacific Militarization
Jason Tower and Joseph Gerson
Sponsored by American Friends Service Committee & Massachusetts Peace Action
Washburn Commons, Episcopal Divinity School, 99 Brattle Street in Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA
With the rise of East Asia as the economic motor force of the 21st century, the U.S. military is pivoting from Iraq and Afghanistan to Asia and the Pacific.
The U.S. is expanding and deepening its alliances across the region, engaging in provocative military exercises, and building weapons systems to contain China – at great cost to the U.S. and Asia-Pacific people. China, too, is expanding its influence and military operations in ways that have provoked anxieties among some neighboring nations.
As part of our movement capacity building commitment, the AFSC and Mass. Peace Action have arranged a public form with Jason Tower, AFSC’s representative in Beijing and Joseph Gerson who has long worked with Asian and Pacific peace movements. Jason’s knowledge and range of contacts across China and into Southeast Asia are extraordinary. Joseph Gerson will have just returned from an international peace conference near Tokyo.
The free public forum will be preceded by a fund raising reception for AFSC with the speakers, with a $50 minimum contribution.
