Occupying Marx

with Gordon Fellman

Set your Internet Browser to OBR.FM.

Brandeis Professor Gordon Fellman will be talking with us about Marxism and
its ongoing relevance to understanding how Occupy helps clarify the meaning
of central Marxian concepts like alienation, ruling ideas, false
consciousness, genuine consciousness, and social class. He will reason that
one's understanding of Occupy is greatly enhanced by applying Marx to it.

Gordon Fellman is Professor of Sociology at Brandeis University, where he
chairs the undergraduate Peace and Conflict Studies Program. He teaches
courses on War and Possibilities of Peace, Social Class and Social Change,
Marx and Freud, Sociology of Empowerment, Psychoanalytic Sociology, and
Sociology of the Israeli-Palestinian Confrontation. The central questions
he poses in his courses and his writings, are: What are the sources, in
history and in the self's development and inner workings, of unnecessary
human suffering? How can it be thoughtfully, carefully, mindfully reduced?
