Prof. H.M. Desarda is an economist focusing on issues of land, water,
energy, employment and environment in India. A member of the
Maharashtra State Planning Board in the late 1980s and early ’90s, he
chaired the 8th-Five-Year-Plan study groups on Agriculture and
Horti­culture and on Irrigation and Flood-Control. He served, among
other things, on the Ma­ha­rashtra State Water Conservation Council
(1991-94),  the State Employment Guaran­tee Council (likewise ’92-93),
 the Study Group and Steer­ing Committee of the Planning Commission
(2004-07) for the 11th Five-Year Plan. He is Vice-President of the
Maharashtra State Famine Eradica­tion Com­mit­­tee, and in 2010 was
nom­in­ated by the President of India to the Executive Council of the
Uni­versity of Hydera­bad.

His contribution to the recent Rio+20 Conference in Brazil was
entitled “The Challenge of Harmonizing Economics, Ecology and Ethics:
A Gandhian Perspective on Greening the Economy.”
