The Venezuelan Urban Agriculture Program started in 2009 with about
200 productive units; this year it reached 22,000 units, producing
more than 20,000 tons of organic food per cycle. Government support
and a network of grassroots organizations are the backbone of this
project.
Martha Bolivar is the architect of this initiative. She is the
president of CIARA (Foundation for the Training and Innovation to
Support the Agrarian Revolution), a division of the Venezuelan
Ministry of Land and Agriculture which promote innovative and
environmentally sustainable initiatives to support the growth of the
agricultural sector (rural, peri-urban and urban) and aquaculture.
