The gigantic fire that claimed the lives of 300 workers in Karachi,
Pakistan this September is not an anomaly but the inevitable consequence of
a production environment shaped by intense pressure from global markets and
where workers have near non-existent negotiation powers. Professors Saleem
and Muhammad will discuss the corrupt collusion of the state and global
capitfrom the garments industry to open-pit coal mining and offshore oil
exploration.

Professor Rakshanda Saleem, is a member of The Alliance for a Secular and
Democratic South Asia in ****Cambridge**, **MA****. Professor Anu Muhammad
is one of the leading activists in ****Bangladesh organizing on the ground
against ever intensifying neo-liberal projects such as open pit coal mining
on rich agricultural land.****
